BIKE RENTALS AND REPAIRS

Neighborhood Bike Works

Neighborhood Bike Works is a very cool nonprofit whose mission is “to create educational, recreational, and career-building opportunities for youth through bicycling in the Philadelphia area, and to promote cycling as an environment-friendly, healthy form of transportation.” Among many youth and adult programs, the University City location offers free repairs and classes. It’s known as “the bike church” because it is located in the basement of St. Mary’s Church, and visiting is literally and figuratively an underground experience. The warehouse offers used and salvaged bike parts at a minimal price—normally ranging just $1-10—and there is no service charge since you do the work yourself. The veteran volunteer bike mechanics that facilitate the repairs are sometimes understaffed. Stick it out and have patience; they are always willing to help. They can even assist you in building a custom bike from scratch. The nonprofit has expanded in recent years and now has locations in North and South Philly, although the bike church in University City remains one of a kind.
